Thornwell Youth Collect Canned Goods To Benefit Local Food Bank

Just before the New Orleans Saints took on the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV, the Hartness-Thornwell Memorial Presbyterian Church youth group took on their annual mission to collect canned goods as part of a national effort to fight hunger. Joined by several Presbyterian College students, Thornwell youth went door-to-door asking for donations of non-perishable food items, canned goods and cash to help stock the food pantry of United Ministries of Clinton, SC. In just a few hours time, the youth collected $323.17 and 336 canned goods and non-perishable food items.

Souper Bowl for Caring was founded by Reverend Brad Smith of Columbia, SC in 1990. For 20 years, the organization has been using the energy and excitement of Super Bowl weekend to rally and mobilize youth to help those in need.

“The goal of Souper Bowl of Caring is to help fight hunger one local community at a time,” said Thornwell Christian Educator, Finley Sutton. “So far, 5,632 groups have raised nearly 6 million dollars in food and cash donations for local food banks and shelters all across the county. This is the eighth year our Thornwell youth have participated in this wonderful program. We are thankful to those in our local community for their support of this annual event!”
