Thornwell Trustee Mary Wain Ellison inspired the young men of TPH Cottage to become artists for a day with encouragements of "Go big - get your arm into it! Take the white off the canvas!" Mary Wain helped the guys take blank canvases and turn them into big, bold works of art. More than 250 alumni/ae and family members gathered on the campus June 25-27 to reconnect with one another and share their common story of growing up at Thornwell. There were plenty of hugs to go around, for first time returnees as well as veteran reunion attendees. At the registration table, the meal tables, and around tables in the Mayes-Dowdle Alumni/ae House, alums swapped stories from days gone by, poured over hundreds of photos, and updated one another on siblings, children and grandchildren. Thornwell youth attended the 2010 Montreat Youth Conference the week of June 6 and as usual, everyone had a terrific time. The conference theme this year was, “In These Waters,” using the week’s activities to remind youth that “God is present in both the stillness and tempests of their days.” Each evening, Thornwell youth enjoyed meeting with the youth from First Presbyterian Church, St. Marys, GA, during “back home group time” where group members were encouraged to reflect on and share any insights from the day’s lessons and/or activities. We are pleased to have a group of very enthusiastic Thornwell volunteers on campus for a week. Members of First Presbyterian Church, Pensacola, FL, will be with us during the week of June 6 to paint walls and hang new whiteboards in The Learning Center, host afternoon activities at the church for the children, and last but not least – construct a large deck onto the back of Wilson Cottage.
